Under the Clothespin

Under the Clothespin features a quirky and elegant mash-up mosaic collage of Center City buildings and architectural highlights, characteristic structures from other local neighborhoods, and the personal geographies of Centre Square workers and passersby, meant to enliven the subway concourse underneath.

The work began by projecting the design at full scale and traced in sections. Those tracings were used as guides to cut glass for each part of the mosaic.

In addition to colored glass, the artists silkscreened some pieces with maps showing places near Centre Square, while others represent places that people come from or travel through to get to Centre Square. Ledieu estimates that for the 400-square-foot installation, about 500 square feet of glass was used.

The famous Claus Oldenberg installation Clothespin sits directly above the area of the mosaic mural.
