This untitled mural by artist Steve Powers honors immigrants, reflects the community and cultural life of Philadelphia and more specifically, the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood. It was originally created in two-parts, with the related (now removed) mural located at 1748 Sansom Street.
The remaining mural stands about five stories high and depicts mostly small businesses in and around the surrounding Rittenhouse area. It is perhaps a more subtle nod to Philadelphia immigrants and the fact that immigrants are and have always been crucial to our city and our country’s economy. As Forbes pointed out in a 2018 article “Immigrants form 25% of new U.S. businesses, driving entrepreneurship.”
When beginning this mural, Powers wrote: “The story of America is immigration. The end. It is also the beginning of every good story about America. This particular story is about 5 stories tall.”
