Youth Design Mural – Hunting Park Recreation Center

This Youth Design Mural led by artist Miriam Singer is located inside the Hunting Park Recreation Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Over a 10 week period, Singer met biweekly with the youth at Hunting Park Recreation Center during their afterschool program to design a mural for the center. The mural was installed with the assistance of the Rec Crew.

The Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) grant that funded the project targets communities affected by violence. This project contributes to that end by improving the physical environment, strengthening anti-violence social norms and peer relationships, and engaging/supporting youth. The mural is a collaboration between the teaching artist and the youth in the afterschool program and is supported by the partnership of not only the Parks and Recreation staff but also the Rec Crew. The markers of success for this project are a successful collaboration between the youth, teaching artist/muralist, and Rec Crew to design and produce a youth-designed mural that represents themselves to the community.

Location Note: Interior mural. This is an interior mural inside of a recreation center that may not always be accessible for public viewing.
