Tree Planting Celebration with Rewilding Philadelphia

Come plant native trees with your neighbors as we bring a pocket forest to the Jasper Street Greenspace!

Rewilding Philadelphia and New Kensington Community Development Corporation (NKCDC) invite you to a Tree Planting Celebration, which will kickoff the transformation of a vacant lot in Kensington to a cool, shady, dense, biodiverse public green space. Enjoy free food, native plant education, and a drumming performance while you plant.

You’ll also have the chance to learn more about Rewilding Philadelphia, a long-term, collaborative community project with a mission of planting 1,500+ native trees in Kensington using the Miyawaki Method for creating forests.

About Rewilding Philadelphia

Creative Producer Pete Angevine has catalyzed and organized a collaboration with New Kensington Community Development Corporation, Mural Arts Philadelphia, the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, RAIR, ArtPhilly and the Philadelphia community to establish a pocket-forest on a vacant lot in Kensington using the Miyawaki Method.

The Miyawaki Method is a scalable, replicable methodology of establishing the conditions that we see in the wild and then getting out of the way while nature does its thing, leading to numerous ecological and social benefits: cooling, increased biodiversity, stormwater remediation, carbon sequestration, soil remediation, and community resilience, among many others.

This future-facing, multifaceted, long-term public project will feature work from artist-in-residence Pedro Ospina, ongoing creative and educational programming, and job opportunities for neighbors to be trained and paid to maintain the space.
