Special Projects explore and experiment with the ways in which public art interacts with public spaces. The finished works and their respective artistic processes are at the forefront of Mural Arts’ vision for the future of muralism and artistic expression; they investigate how muralism can encompass the social and civic foundations of its traditions while also expanding into new practices and techniques. The projects are often created and designed in response to artist-driven ideas.

A Special Project provides a platform for a local community, artists, and Mural Arts to learn and grow through dynamic and inventive conversations and methodologies. Working with multiple partners across diverse fields, Special Projects include robust partnerships with architectural firms, environmentalists, food access activists, and beyond. These collaborations are springboards for investigation and learning about new mediums and manners of thinking, and how democratic and creative expression within the public sphere can take many forms, on and off the wall.
