Voyage of Becoming

Voyage of Becoming by artist Andre Chaney is an interior mural at Girard College. This mural reflects the spirit of Girard College, shaped by strong relationships, shared traditions, and everyday moments of connection. Drawing from school pride, friendly competition, music, and community gatherings, it highlights core values of respect, self-discipline, responsibility, integrity, compassion, and encouragement as guiding forces in students’ lives. Through bold color and movement, the mural sends a simple message to students and outsiders alike to honor where you come from, look beyond the walls, follow your own path, and be yourself.

Artist statement:
“The Voyage of Becoming mural was created to visually honor the journey that students and staff experience during their time at Girard College. The work reflects growth, discovery, discipline, and community values that define both the institution and the individuals shaped within it. The mural serves as a visual narrative, guiding viewers through the academic, cultural, and personal evolution that takes place throughout a student’s time at the school.

“The first wall introduces Girard College’s rich history and cultural significance. Architectural elements such as Founders Hall anchor the composition, while the “Good Friends” ship used by Stephen Girard during his time as a sea captain symbolizes foundation, legacy, and the beginning of the journey. This imagery establishes the mural’s central metaphor of movement and becoming.

“Flowing wave currents then carry the viewer into the second wall, which highlights the school’s vibrant culture of music and performance. Framed within the architecture are two central figures surrounded by musical notes, snowflakes, and sun motifs. These elements reference the school’s winter and spring concerts cornerstones of Girard College’s cultural identity and represent rhythm, expression, and seasonal cycles of growth.

“The mural transitions seamlessly into the third wall, where the visual language becomes more minimal to emphasize education and personal development. Three figures are positioned at their desks, surrounded by plant motifs that symbolize growth and cultivation. Behind them stand the school’s core values Responsibility, Respect, Compassion, and Integrity serving as both support and foundation as the students look forward toward their futures beyond graduation.

“The final wall celebrates another vital aspect of Girard College’s culture: athletics. Sports imagery is used to highlight teamwork, collaboration, courage, and perseverance qualities that extend beyond the field and into everyday life. These values reinforce the collective spirit shared by the school’s community.

“Overall, Voyage of Becoming is both a tribute and a reflection capturing what matters most to the Girard College community while honoring the individual journey each person undertakes. The mural invites viewers to see themselves within the story, recognizing that becoming is not a destination, but an ongoing voyage.”
