Mary Field Apartments Mural Project
This is a new six-story mural by master muralist Cesar Viveros located at Mary Field Senior Apartments in Southwest Philadelphia. Made possible with support from Pennsylvania Housing Affordability and Rehabilitation Enhancement (PHARE) fund, the mural transforms the side of the senior center with vibrant natural imagery and portraits of Mary Field residents.
Inspired by a garden that serves as a sanctuary for residents, the mural places community members among the flora, flowers, and garden gazebo of HumanGood’s four-building campus in Kingsessing, connecting the people who call the campus home with the natural environment that surrounds them.
After the Mary Field community selected Viveros for his signature naturalistic style, the artist visited the campus several times to photograph residents and learn about their lives, helping shape the imagery and stories woven throughout the mural.
The project brought residents together from across the four-building campus for a community-wide paint day at the gazebo. Residents also participated in a series of six poetry workshops led by acclaimed poet and spoken word artist Ursula Rucker, creating a poetry collection that will be distributed during the mural dedication.
This is the second mural located on the HumanGood campus, following Threads of Joy: Celebrating the Golden Years by Kelley Prevard, dedicated at the Ann Thomas Presbyterian Apartments in 2025.
